Learners aged 16–19 with a GCSE Grade 3 or below will also study towards achieving a Grade 4–9 in GCSE English or Maths.
Course Overview
The Level 1 Bricklaying Certificate is designed to introduce you to the essential skills needed for a future career in the bricklaying industry.
You’ll train in our fully equipped construction workshops, where you’ll learn how to build garden walls, practice basic bricklaying techniques, construct cavity walling for houses, and understand how to read drawings and set out buildings accurately.
Alongside practical skills, you’ll also develop the hand skills and tool competence required by the industry. You will study a range of theory and employability units to help prepare you for progression into work or further training.
What You Will Learn
Your training will cover both practical and theory-based elements, including:
- Basic block laying – constructing walls using blocks
- Basic bricklaying – building walls using bricks
- Basic cavity walling – constructing house walls with cavities
- Basic setting out – reading drawings and positioning a building
- Health and safety – understanding essential construction site safety
- Communication skills – how the construction industry operates and communicates
- Building methods – learning how buildings are constructed and the role of a bricklayer
How You Will Be Assessed
You’ll learn through a combination of practical workshop sessions, classroom-based theory lessons, and independent study.
Your knowledge and practical skills will be assessed continuously throughout the course. Each unit includes:
- Multiple-choice written exams
- Practical assessments to demonstrate your skills

After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- The Level 2 Bricklaying Technical Certificate
- A bricklaying or construction apprenticeship

The Level 2 Bricklaying Certificate builds on the basics learned at Level 1 and prepares you for skilled work or further training in the industry.
Training takes place in our dedicated bricklaying workshops, where you’ll develop the ability to construct a variety of masonry structures to industry standards. You’ll also strengthen your understanding of how the construction sector operates, how to interpret working drawings, and how buildings are put together.
Your practical training is designed to reflect real workplace expectations, helping you gain the advanced skills and confidence needed to progress.
